Narrative Structure.

Our plot is based on a female singing about a male who has broken her heart, gone around and hurt people, who is a cold person and doesnt love him anymore. We are going to challenge ourselves in portraying this to the audience, through the visuals and expression.

Firstly we are going to be filming around the subway and town to express how she feels isolated and alone  after what the male has done. We will want to give the sense as if she is looking for the male but doesnt want to find him. Also we will be basing the video around a jar with a light in it, to give the sense that this is her heart that she is holding a jar, the female will always be holding the jar in every shot so it is ongoing and that the audience understand. Even thought the girl will be playing the pieno the jar will always be in shot just to link it together. We didnt want to use a male because we want the female to look isolated and for this to come across to the audience. Also the idea of her looking for him would come across better with there being no male. The female will always be unhappy about the situation, and in parts sometimes angry because of what has happened and what she has had to go through. The whole music video will be dark, and may be in black and white depending on how dark it is and how the lights of the vehicles will work.

The narrative structure for our plot i think is non-linear, this is because is cuts from her being in different parts of the subway and town, which if it was linear would cut back to the same shot to carry on the narrative. It is also non-linar becuase we cut from the subway, to town, to the female playing piano, which will make the video more interesting to watch without it being concentrated on just the town and subway.

This is a word document on the narrative structure using the different theories to analyse Ed Sheerans music video.

Our text will follow typical narrative patterns, it will follow Todorovs theory in the fact that the equilibrium will be the female walking around the subway, contemplating on what has happened, and how she is unhappy about the male. The disruption will be the fact that she gets quite worried that he could be following her, so the shots will represent this with face pace editing. The re-equilibrium will be when the girl drops the jar and it smashes. This will represent the girls heart and that the male can no longer get to it and hurt her.

For Barthes' theory our media text will follow this pattern because we would like the audience to be asking questions such as 'why is she in a place like that?'. This is because the song is quite a soft song and the place is quite harsh and grungy. We would like the audience to ask questions to themselves and figure out the answers because it will make the text more interesting to watch, and it could challenge the audience in the fact that they have to look for the answers.
