Research: Genre Music Video Conventions.

We have chosen to focus upon the genre of the 'singer/songwriter' for our music video. This is because we personally like the music and how it means something to the artist because of how they have written it themselves, plus we thought it would be good to base our video on. Also we chose this song because we easily have access to locations that would link to the song and work well together.

The conventions of the genre we have selected are:
- Typical Locations: On location. (Usually just one location so not to confuse the audience.)
- Typical Characters: One artist who is the lead singer, dancers, and sometimes lover.
- Typical Mise en Scene: Artist, musical instrument, the costume would be very basic and easy on the eye, with the lighting being low key and simple.
- Typical Narratives: Fall in love, unrequited love, and breaking up.
- Typical Media Language: Close ups of lead singer, shot changes when beat changes, lead singer is always well lit.
Typical Ideologies: Love/Heartbreak.

Using the conventions of Andrew Goodwins theory we will be outlining the genre conventions of a singer/songwriter:
- There is a relationship between the lyrics and visuals, as most of the songs are about love or heart break. The visuals amplify the lyrics, by expressing how alone the artist may be or how happy the artist is.
- We do think that singer/songwriters have their own music video style or mainly being on location and being alone.
- In addition to this the genre conventions of singer/songwriters do have many close ups of the main artist.
- Sometimes there is intertextual references, to other music videos and films.

Using the conventions of Pete Fraser theory we will be outlining the genre conventions of a singer/songwriter:
- Lyrics - There is usually a overall feel/mood that links to the meaning of the lyrics, and key lines do play a specific part in visuals that are associated with song.
- Music - Within the genre of a singer/songwriter, the music video makes use of the tempo to determine the editing.
- Cinematography - The camera movements are extremely specific to have a significant impact on meaning. Certain camera movements, shot and distances are important to have an impact on the meaning and audience.
- Editing - Singer/songwritiers music videos do use a slow pace and a gentle shot usually as the camera is mainly based on the artist.

This is based on the music video Adele - Someone Like You.
