Research: Conventions of our Sub-Genre of Music Video

Plan B - Stay Too Long
     As Plan B is also a singer/song writer, this follows our music genre conventions of our chosen music video sub genre 'Christina Perri - Jar of hearts'. This is one reason why I have chosen to talk about this music video but the other is that I really like this video and it has an extremely good narrative. Therefore this makes a strong relationship between the lyrics and visuals and also the music and the visuals within this video. This follows Andrew Goodwin's music video conventions which I will be basing this work on.

     For this music video Plan B has chosen the location of pubs, nightclubs and a restaurant. For his lyrics and music this location fits perfectly with them, however, because the location is in places which is full of people having a good time Plan B challenges the conventions of a music video for the majority of singer/song writers. As they are usually in a quiet place on their own for their music videos and they tend to be soft paced music instead of fast paced such as the Adele, Christina Perri and Tracy Chapman. The majority of singer/song writers have simple videos, use the colour black and white and are more delicate and subdued.

     This music video and lyrics is showing and talking about Plan B's night out saying "I always stay too long, lining up for something to go wrong" while Plan B is singing these lyrics there is a shot over to the women which then makes us question if something is going to happen between the two of them. We then think this even more when further on in the video there is a lyric of Plan B saying "I'm at the bar and I see that chick checking me out". Within this part it challenges the conventions of our music video as in our music video our idea is that she has just split up with her boyfriend because he has cheated on her and here Plan B is just meeting a new girl. Tension is building within this part of the video such as the music speeding up.

     This then leads onto Goodwin's convention 'voyeurism' in this video. There is plenty of reference to this within this music video as in these shots below you can see that the men are interested and looking alot at this woman in a sexual way as they are finding her attractive. Therefore this shows how men treat women in the way that they just see them as objects.
