Research:Conventions of Music Video Genre- 2.

I have chosen the music video 'Tracey Chapman - The Promise' because i think it brilliantly represents the sub-genre singer/songwriter videos. This video follows the majority of the conventions, but does challenge a few. I will be using Frasers theory to base my work on.

The lyrics do establish a general feeling and mood because of how slow paced it is, and soft music to accompany this. There are a few key lines in the song, but don't  link to the visuals as good as they could do, because there are just random soft photographs throughout the video the which challenges the conventions.

The music video does use the tempo of the track to determine the editing, as the editing is slow paced and gentle. This type of sub-genre can easily be categorised because the artist has wrote the song themselves and always has a meaning behind it which is often quite obvious. The features are reflected in the fact that the music videos are usually in black and white, like Tracey Chapman's video, and soft paced editing.

This music video doesn't use any reference to intertextuality and no singer/songwriters do because of the fact that they have usually wrote the song themselves and would like the video to be about them. These points follow the music video conventions.
In this video the cinematography is quite unusual because it is just certain photographs joined together, which do sometimes start zoomed in, then zoom out. I do think this challenges the conventions of a singer/songwriter.
